Upload or paste the document, ask for a structured summary, then ask specific questions and demand the exact quote that supports each answer. Never rely on an AI summary alone for contracts, medical or legal papers.
What is this?
Most AI apps can read files such as PDFs and Word documents and answer questions about them. It’s one of the most useful everyday skills, and one of the easiest to get wrong.
What do you need?
- A chatbot that accepts file uploads, or text you can paste in. Limits on file size and type vary by provider and plan, so check the current details.

Step by step
- Upload and orient. “Tell me what kind of document this is, who wrote it, and its date.”
- Summarise in layers. “Give me a 3-sentence overview, then the main sections with one line each.”
- Ask specific questions. “What does it say about the notice period?”
- Demand evidence. “Quote the exact wording and give the page or section.”
- Check the quote in the original yourself.
- Ask what’s missing. “What does this document not cover that I might expect?”

Common mistakes

Limitations
AI summaries can miss or misstate clauses. For contracts, legal, medical or financial decisions, use the AI to prepare questions, then check with a qualified professional.
