Claude Beginner Guide: Your First Useful Chat
Claude is Anthropic’s assistant, often used for writing, long documents and coding. Sign up free at claude.ai, give it clear context, and iterate. Model names and plan features change often.
What is it?
Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant. As of late September 2026, Anthropic’s latest models are Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 (see our story). Anthropic has also been rolling out a unified experience for chats, tasks, projects, connectors and skills, initially to Pro and Max plans.
What do you need?
A free account at claude.ai. Claude has a permanent free plan; limits and included features change, so check Anthropic’s current pages.
Your first useful chat
- Sign up and start a new chat.
- Try a document task: paste text or upload a file and ask for a structured summary. See How to use AI with documents.
- Give context and a format: “Summarise for a busy manager in 5 bullets.”
- Refine: “shorter”, “more formal”, “add a table”.
- Verify facts and quotes.
