ChatGPT Beginner Guide: Your First Useful Chat

Published 30 Sep 2026 Updated 30 Sep 2026 Last verified 30 Sep 2026 6 min read
The short version

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s chatbot. Sign up free at chatgpt.com, give it a real task with clear context, then refine. Features and plan limits change often, so check OpenAI’s current release notes.

What is it?

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s AI assistant. It’s widely used as a general-purpose helper for writing, explaining, planning and coding. OpenAI regularly adds features. At its September 2026 DevDay, for example, it announced agents called “Dots” (see our story), but not every feature is available on every plan.

What do you need?

A free account at chatgpt.com. Check OpenAI’s current pages for what the free plan includes.

Your first useful chat

  1. Sign up and open a new chat.
  2. Pick a task from your real week, such as an email, a plan or something you want explained.
  3. Use the template from How to write a good AI prompt.
  4. Reply with tweaks until it’s right.
  5. Check any facts before using them.
Good first prompt
Help me plan my week. Here's what I need to do: [LIST]. I have about [HOURS] free per day. Ask me any questions first, then give me a realistic day-by-day plan.

Privacy first

Look at your data and memory settings before you share anything personal, and don’t paste passwords or private details. See AI privacy basics.

Common mistakes

  • Vague one-line prompts.
  • Accepting the first answer.
  • Believing sites offering a “free ChatGPT Plus trial”. There is no standing public one.

What to try next

Learn about memory and custom instructions, browse the prompt vault and compare with Claude and Grok.
