AI Automation for Beginners: Start Small, Stay in Control
Automation means a task runs with little or no manual effort. Adding AI lets it handle messy text, like emails or notes. Start with one boring, low-risk task, keep a human approving anything important, and only then scale up.
What is it?
A simple automation has a trigger (“a form is submitted”), an action (“summarise it”) and an output (“save to a sheet”). Agents go further and decide their own steps. See What are AI agents?
Easy first wins
- Turn meeting notes into an action list.
- Summarise a long email thread into three bullets.
- Draft replies to common questions for you to approve.
- Sort and label a batch of documents.
How to start safely
- Do the task manually with AI a few times first.
- Save the prompt that works.
- Only then connect tools, and give them the least access they need.
- Keep a person approving anything sent, bought, deleted or published.
- Log what it does so you can check.
Automations repeat mistakes at speed. Web pages and emails can hide instructions that try to hijack an AI (prompt injection). Don’t give automations access to money or sensitive accounts until you understand the risks.
