Claude Opus 5.5 launches with lower prices than Opus 5

On 22 September 2026 Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5.5, the first model in its Claude 5.5 family. Reported details:

• API pricing of $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, down from $5 and $25 for Opus 5. That’s roughly 40% cheaper according to the report.
• Performance said to match Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 model.
• Early testers said its writing is clearer, with the most important information placed first.
• Anthropic says the 5.5 models had extensive alignment testing, external evaluations and safeguards for high-risk areas such as cybersecurity and biology.
